The 10-Point Piano Moving Checklist

Professional Preparation for a Seamless Move

1. Document the Condition: Take clear "before" photos of the piano from all angles, including the lid, legs, and keyboard. This serves as a record of the instrument's condition prior to the move.

2. Verify Brand and Dimensions: Confirm the brand, model and serial number. Measure the height (for uprights) or length (for grands) so the movers can bring the correctly sized piano board or specialized gear.

3. Map the Path: Walk the route from the piano to the exit. Measure all doorways, hallways, and tight turns. If a door needs to be removed from its hinges, try to do this before the movers arrive.

4. Clear the "Landing Zone": Ensure the new space is ready. Remove rugs, furniture, and lamps from the area where the piano will sit. For best care, place the piano against an interior wall.

5. Secure the Lid and Keys: Close the lid and the cover over the keys. If the piano has a lock, engage it. Avoid using any tape on the wood, as it can damage the finish; your movers will use professional wrap.

6. Disclose Hazards: Be specific about stairs (spiral, steep, or curved) and outside terrain (grass or gravel). This ensures the team brings the right number of people and the correct equipment.

7. Clear the Driveway: Ensure there is a reserved, flat parking space for the moving truck as close to the entrance as possible to minimize the time the piano is outdoors.

8. Safety First: Moving a heavy instrument requires total concentration. Keep pets and children in a separate room to prevent distractions or accidents while the movers are lifting.

9. Leave it on the Wheels: Never attempt to roll the piano yourself. Decorative wheels can snap or scratch hardwood floors. Professional movers will lift the piano onto a heavy-duty dolly.

10. Confirm Paperwork: Have your quote confirmation and any building-required insurance certificates (COIs) ready. Many buildings in the DC area require these documents before a move can begin.
