California Climate & Your Piano
California presents the opposite challenge from the humid Southeast. Much of the state runs dry, and dry air pulls moisture out of a piano's wood. As the soundboard, pinblock, and joints lose moisture they shrink, which can loosen tuning pins, open hairline cracks in the soundboard, and thin out the tone. A piano coming from Maryland's humid summers into an arid California room has a real adjustment ahead of it.
The state is not uniform, and where your piano lands matters. Coastal areas like San Francisco, Marin, and San Diego stay comparatively moderate, though marine air can swing damp and dry by season. Inland and Southern California — Sacramento, Palm Springs, the valleys, and the high desert — run considerably drier, and indoor heating drops humidity further.
Give your piano at least 3–4 weeks to settle into its new environment before scheduling a tuning. Tuning the same week it arrives is money wasted, because the strings, soundboard, and pinblock are all still stabilizing.
