Texas Climate & Your Piano
Texas is not one climate, and where your piano lands changes what it needs. Roughly speaking, Interstate 35 divides the state. East of it — Houston, Beaumont, the Gulf Coast — the air is humid year-round, and moisture makes wood swell, keys stick, and action feel sluggish. West of it, conditions turn steadily drier, and in far West Texas the air is genuinely arid. Dry air does the opposite: wood shrinks, tuning pins loosen, and hairline cracks can open in a soundboard. Dallas–Fort Worth and Austin sit in between, moderate on average but capable of swinging both directions across a year.
There's a second factor that catches people off guard. Texas summers run hot enough that air conditioning runs hard for months, and heavy air conditioning pulls moisture out of indoor air. A piano in a Houston living room can face humid outdoor conditions and artificially dry indoor conditions in the same week. What your piano actually responds to is the room it sits in, not the forecast.
Give your piano at least 3–4 weeks to settle into its new environment before scheduling a tuning. Tuning the same week it arrives is money wasted, because the strings, soundboard, and pinblock are all still stabilizing.
